Electro Swing IV : A Conversation with Tape Five

We continue our serie of interviews. This time it’s Martin from Tape Five, which track Tequila is included into the album « Electro Swing IV selected & mixed by Bart&Baker ».

1. Can you briefly describe who you are and your career so far ?

« Bonjour, thanks for your interest! This is Martin Strathausen, creator of TAPE FIVE, which means I do the songs (of course except the cover versions) play most instruments, have the overall idea and do the production. I did lots of commercials for Radio/TV in the past, had some gain in the Pop segment, but then decided to do something of my very own. TAPE FIVE was born, as the idea of especially that TAPE no.5 in the millions of possibilities in music… »

2 What has been your story with ElectroSwing music ? When did you first discover the genre and what has been your thoughts at the time ?

« I always liked the trashy brass sound of old recordings! And I admire the compositions, which hardly anyone is able to do nowadays. In 1999 I did the track AVENUE DU GARE (excuse the wrong french language, its the song of a drunken british tourist) which was released later in 2003 on Vinyl or on my first TAPE FIVE album SWINGFOOD MOOD in 2006. Thats what I felt at that time. »

3. Tell us more about the track and what you have tried to express with the remix.

« Our Tequila version is not even intended to be typical electroswing (except the four voice saxophone bridge which I really love) but was inspired by my friend DJ Gardener of Delight. We wanted to make an easy acoustic CocktailBar version of the famous track, that we already listened to when we were kids. And of course he, as a DJ wanted our version to be longer. »

4. what are your main influences in the electroswing scene ? DJ ? Track ? Band ?
« Excuse me. I am not, or not much influenced by nowadays artists! My main inspiration is the original Swing Era seen through my eyes. When I was working on my recent album in 2009 and had the idea of a style like « Charleston House » for my tracks BAD BOY GOOD MAN or MADAME COQUETTE the Caravan Palace album was released, and I felt something like morphogenetic fields. Different minds at different places came to a similar solution. The time was ready for that! »

5. What are you preparing for 2012 ?

« The 4th TAPE FIVE album, which will be great, and mostly swing styled! I´m really thankful to the universe for my new tracks and looking forward for a strong release! »

ElectroSwing IV : A conversation with David Jones

David Jones is a prolific producer, but he has always managed to keep a high level of quality to its productions. His remix of Will Gold « Swing Time » is one of the key point of the ElectroSwing IV compilation. The man itself talks about music and projects.

1. Can you briefly describe who you are and your career so far ?

I’m a music lover. I started working at home with a piano and now with a mix of fortune and capability I’ve got my own studio and office in Milan where I produce my own tracks and remix. As a producer I did over 100 releases in my career and got a lot of success since 2006, reaching over ten N.1 and several Top 10 in musical market in France, Spain and also in digital stores like Itunes and Beatport.

2 What has been your story with ElectroSwing music ? When did you first discover the genre and what has been your thoughts at the time ?

It’s part of the culture of my own country. My grandfather played that track a lot when I was young, so it’s something like mixing your culture and your past with your present.

I think that I connected this kind of music to the weekend (those moments spent with my grandfather at home). So my feeling are connected to « holiday » moments.

3. Tell us more about the track featured on ElectroSwing IV  and what you have specifically tried to express with the remix ?

I tried to mix a ballad with a swing movement and combine these two different cultures. It was easy to connect two winning elements. We also contacted one of the historical vocalist of the swing culture.

4. what are your main influences in the electroswing scene ? DJ ? Track ? Band ?

I think that the genre was great during the past with tracks like « Jazzbit – Sing Sing Sing » and right now too. « We Don’t Speak Americano » is one of the best examples. Every artist, as every sound, can influence me. It depends on the situation in which I am. I’m mostly influenced by situations, for example for me « live performances » have got a high impact, more than an artist or song listened at the radio.  To make « Swing Time » I tried to use my house sound mixed with something old as Yolanda Be Cool did with Carosone because I saw the reactions by people playing this kind of productions.

5. What are you preparing for 2012 ?

House, I’ve been working on the evolution of my sound, putting new elements and trying to mix more electro and progressive sounds in a house concept. The result is amazing because now I’m working on the sound that I loved most of the first part of the century but with much power and my personal touch.

ElectroSwing IV : A conversation with The Real Tuesday Weld

We continue our exciting cycle of Interview with one of the pionneer of the ElectroSwing market, the famous REAL TUESDAY WELD. They would have been logicically selected for ElectroSwing IV but their album is out early next year. Next time guys !!!

1. Hi Stephen, can you briefly introduce the band and the story so far ?

I started The Real Tuesday Weld in 1999 after a dream about the 1930s British crooner Al Bowlly.  I grew up in a peculiar house where virtually the only thing that was played was pre-war jazz and easy listening.  When I started to make music I wanted to try to recreate what I remembered from childhood but  obviously I couldn’t afford my own big band.  About the only other music I was interested in was electronica so I began using samplers and then computers.
I made some songs to sound the way I thought people in the thirties would imagine music to sound in the future.  I called it « Antique Beat ».  Someone from a record label got in touch and asked if they could release the song ‘I Love the Rain’ which was a new song using old samples.  Then we did an album and more singles and then another album called ‘I Lucifer’ with the song « Bathtime in Clerkenwell » which I suppose was a very early electro-swing tune.
We have released six records now, several of them are concept albums and I also write and produce music for arts and theatre projects, films and other work such as the songs for the recent game L.A.Noire. Plus I like to do remixes when I can- like «  Crazy in Love » for The Puppini Sisters .

2. Tell us about the new album « The Last Werewolf »

« Songs for the Last werewolf’ is soundtrack for Glen Duncan’s latest novel ‘The Last Werewolf » . We have worked together before on ‘I Lucifer » – I like to have a story behind the music. It is a collection of songs and tracks and musical pieces ranging from torch songs, gypsy jazz and electro swing through to electronica and swamp blues.

3. What has been your (love) story with Electro Swing so far ?

Well I sometimes get called the ‘English Godfather’ of electro-swing but in fact I would rather see myself as the ‘Fairy Godmother’!
What we have been calling ‘Antique Beat’ has an overlap with Electro Swing but I think the difference is that I come first from a love of the songs of the thirties and forties  (whether they are swing and with beats and for dancing or not)  not only from a dance / house DJ music background.  But it has been amazing to hear so many incredible happy groovy tunes over the last few years where new meets old meets new.  And we love to play our version of the style with our amazing animations.  We have always worked with animators and film makers and this is an important part of our live set

4. Any DJ, Artist, track youparticlarly like and would like to support ?

I like Kormac, Nicolas Repac and recently Lazlo

5. Plans for 2012

We are touring in the spring.  Coming back to France – Hurray!
Looking forward to paying live a lot more – I have  mainly been in the studio for the last couple of years
And right now, I am just finishing up a Lady Gaga mixup for the Christmas stocking!

ElectroSwing IV : A conversation with Nuno Endo

Nuno Endo (aka Kristiaan Endicott is an Edinburgh based DJ) who created the first version of what has becomed a Bart&Baker re-edit and one of the highest moment of the ElectroSwing IV compilation. Discover the man behind the music !

1. Can you briefly describe who you are and your carreer so far ?

I’m an Edinburgh based DJ who dabbles with production.  From as far back as I can remember……. 1994 I’ve been into the jazzy side of hip hop and house. My career so far? Did mixtapes for friends, had belt drive!!! turntables, bypassed CDJs and now mix and produce via laptop. I also part of the team at the popular, and first, website of the scene www.electro-swing.com

2 What has been your story with ElectroSwing music ? When did you first discover the genre and what has been your thoughts at the time ?

Id say Ive been immersed in Electro Swing for around 18 months.  The first track I got was the M.In & Bastian Schuster track ‘New Orleans’. From here I quickly picked up it was not all 4/4, thankfully. I find electro swing inclusive.  You cant seem to wipe the smile from your face when you hear this music and those that say they don’t like jazz, quickly forget they ever thought like that.

3. Tell us more about the track and what you have tried to express with the remix

This was my second attempt at an electroswing track.  I had remixed Duke Ellington’s The  »A » Train in March 2011 while ‘Squirrels & Onions’ came in April.  I had one of those generic Big Band 2xCD compilation albums and really liked the idea of speeding up sections of ’Christopher Columbus’ by Fletcher Henderson and introducing a house beat.
All my tracks and mixes are on soundcloud and it was on here that a few had commented that the track had received positive responses when played out.
I received an emal from Bart Sampson of Bart&Baker saying also it had gone down well on the dancefloor and asked if they or i could take it into the studio for further production.  Over the next months Bart dealt with clearance issues, Wagram, and added studio beats (the original was also sampled ;) percussion, bass and scat vocals to give the final cut a strong beat, double bass and professionalism without losing the original feel of the track.  You can go compare them at www.soundcloud.com/nuno-endo

4. what are your main influences in the electroswing scene ? DJ ? Track ? Band ?

Currently I’m on the pulse of the swing house that is coming out of America.  Cabbie Hat Recordings was set up 2011 to purely release swing house and the music of Wattie Green is also a favourite. This side to electro swing is fairly small and bridges the club side.
DJs: Julien Incontrol, Enzo Siffredi, DJ Medis, Shemian
Track: Smokingrooves – ‘Jack’s Gig’
Band: The Twilight Players (not a band but ace)

5. What are you preparing for 2012 ?

More of the same I hope.  I’ll be seeing the New Year in playing electro swing at Vegas www.vegasscotland.com and if Im still doing that with another couple of tracks out then I’ll be happy.
